*dies laughing*
The fluffies threatened to sue the Gardnerians for being big meanies and something about hexing the Gardnerians. Oh, and then the fluffies got all offended and tried "That's not how it's supposed to go... You're WICCAN. You're not supposed to fight back or be mean! Harm None!" And all of the Gardnerians just laughed and laughed.
(To be clear, usually the Gardnerians don't talk much in the group... They just kinda look at each other from across FB. So this hitherto unseen community reaction was a thing of beauty.)
And I had to share it because if I don't stop laughing, I'm going to wake the kids up.

There is always something perversely satisfying when things like that happen.

I am so ever grateful that such a smiting is not even needed on this board. I can not say the same of facebook and at the risk of the Gardnerians being compared to Hitler. I hope the beatings continue until discipline improves. Would it be too terribly inappropriate to post screenies? There is always something perversely satisfying when things like that happen. This

Hehe... while I am not Wiccan in any sense or form it always delights me to hear stories of fluffies being torn new ones.

Draco, I'll see if I can get screensies... I haven't checked if the admin deleted the fun from last night yet.

Haha! I got flamed on facebook the other day when I posted a picture of my hubby's wrongly made burger from Macca's. I'm not a vegan/vegetarian and this woman clearly was. When told I shouldn't have been at Macca's in the first place, I was like: My kids were hungry so I fed them. Can't argue with hungry kids, at least not mine anyway. They are persistent like that.

Well, they deleted most of the fun from last night. But some genius (sockpuppet) that calls themselves 'Alexander Gardner' is trying to school the Gardnerians about the relationship between Crowley and Gardner. I'm sure that more hilarity is ensuing, but the admin is getting rid of the mildly insulting posts pretty fast. I don't understand why she has, as to now, refused to ban the trolls. She lets the trolls keep prodding the regular membership, and then they all act surprise when the Gardnerians don't fall for that shit. Ah well. Too bad I can't share it with ya'll. Because it was endlessly amusing.

No. But the fluffies came in trying to behave as though it were a huge revelation that Crowley and Gardner were linked and the Gardnerians smacked them down hard.

If that FB group is closed or hidden, I'd prefer no screen shots in an open part of our forum.
It's interesting to see how people react to baiting and trolling, and see how that reaction changes over time, as people gain more experience with that kind of abuse. Some of the groups of which I'm a member tend to have bible thumpers come in and preach hell and damnation for sinners. Guaranteed emotional trigger.

I sometimes like trolls because they can provoke interesting discussion and debate on things we have started to take for granted and not talk about anymore. Occasionally it also leads to new insights although I doubt if they are the insights the trolls intended. Other times I puzzle about what actually motivates trolls. For example I wonder if those bible thumpers really think their tactics will make people question their own beliefs, or do they just think they get brownie points from their "God", or do they just like attention?

Attention would be my assumption in most cases. How riled up can I get people? And yes, unfortunately, some misguided souls out there might just believe that they are out there doing their god's work.
I remember so-called Erisians coming into MW a couple years ago, and one can tell that they aren't real Erisians but merely pretend, in order to justify trolling, by the chaos they create. A true Erisian wouldn't create chaos: they trust that their goddess is strong enough to do so by herself. Oh boy, the back-lash I got over that was epic.

Amusingly enough this gem about trolling and what to do was posted on my Facebook wall this morning. ha. I do enjoy trolls, especially on certain Yahoo! news stories. I would have liked to have seen this instance as well.

Amusingly enough this gem about trolling and what to do was posted on my Facebook wall this morning. ha. Great article on the history of trolling and the mindset of trolls. Not so much about how to handle trolling. The one method sampled turned out detrimental. And of course, the comments on that article are hilarious.

Umm, that article is full of all kinds for BS. "For the LuLz", for example, means what it says, for the laughs. Not to "teach someone a lesson". The center of that article has quotes from ADMITTED trolls all basically saying the same thing, "it's funny". Why some people feel the need to make it more than that (the "trolls likely have problems with depressions, low self-esteem, and anger") is beyond any troll. And the study about the comments effecting perception of a story? Intelligent, independent readers usually DON'T READ THE COMMENTS. Why? Because they know it's going to be full of trolls. It's also a flawed study. It appears the study DIDN'T have a third group read the article with all the comments, and a fourth group read the article WITHOUT any comments. Any fifth grade scientist knows you have to have a control. (Yes, I read the actual study report, because I felt I had to.)
Is trolling evil? Not always. Is it just harmless fun? Not always. But, trying to lump every troll into a group with a common motivation, mental state, or reason is moronic.

I also don't think every troll is in it for fun. The bible thumpers going into pagan forums for instance, hoping to fill them with fear of their god, don't come across as poking fun, or laughing inside their head. Well, maniacally, maybe. They might not even consider themselves trolls. They might honoustly believe they are performing a good deed. Which, from my point of view, is quite sad. I prefer a troll who's just in it for their own fun.

That is not trolling. That's something else entirely. Spamming is more accurate, Xentor.
Edit: from Urban Dictionary:
"Trolling The art of deliberately, cleverly, and secretly pissing people off, usually via the internet, using dialogue. Trolling does not mean just making rude remarks: Shouting swear words at someone doesn't count as trolling; it's just flaming, and isn't funny. Spam isn't trolling either; it pisses people off, but it's lame.
The most essential part of trolling is convincing your victim that either a) truly believe in what you are saying, no matter how outrageous, or b) give your victim malicious instructions, under the guise of help. Trolling requires decieving; any trolling that doesn't involve decieving someone isn't trolling at all; it's just stupid. As such, your victim must not know that you are trolling; if he does, you are an unsuccesful troll."
or
"Trolling is trying to get a rise out of someone. Forcing them to respond to you, either through wise-crackery, posting incorrect information, asking blatantly stupid questions, or other foolishness. However, trolling statements are never true or are ever meant to be construed as such. Nearly all trolled statements are meant to be funny to some people, so it does have some social/entertainment value.
"Trolling" isn't simply "harmful statements". Intentionally insulting/libelous statements are "flaming"."
Trolling is specifically done to be funny. It requires deceiving. The bible thumpers actually believe what they are saying is true. Therefore it is not trolling. If the posts are counter to the topic, or unwanted, it is spam.

I'm fairly certain trolls are into it for the same reason everyone else is, the dopamine rush that comes from being satisfied in some way. Whatever their "reasons" it's just to satisfy the same addiction we all have.
Edit: as for the article, TL/DR
