Not sure I know all the differences with these...
My sisters and father have been involved with Ren Faire for ever so long, as well as the SCA. I have done a little bit of Ren Faire, and was with the Sea Dogs at Novato a few times. I have been doing SCA stuff for a bit more than a year now.
Anyone else do this kind of stuff?

Okay, Cosplay is short for costume play, and while it, by definition covers any sort of costume, it tends to be pop icons, specifically cartoons. Living History is kind of like the civil war reenactors, it doesn't necessarily have to do with war, but usually covers from the American Revolution-Civil War. LARP is Live Action Role Play, it is like D&D, without the dice. You could cosplay at a Ren fair, but it isn't required and the two crowds tend to keep them separate. Ren Fair is not living history because it is not historically accurate The SCA could be Cosplay although see above with ren fair, or it could be living history although they tend to separate themselves. Larping is more of a game and doesn't quite fit with the rest Oh, and I've done living history, FRG's family does it. I've also done LARPing, fun, but people take it too seriously

I am associated with a LARP here in Perth, although my husband is more involved. I sidelined myself due to the kids as they're a little too young to be involved. I find there's too many politics involved within SCA although I love the idea of it. Ren Fayre's are fun, Perth has one every year.
I'm not sure everybody would agree that LARP is like D&D without the dice. While some LARPs are serious stuff, other's are for the sheer enjoyment, at least, the one I'm involved with is.

I am lucky to be involved with a group in the SCA that is more interested in fun than in politics. We would rather drum into the night to attract bellydancers than to spend all day trying to worm into the good graces of Royalty!
The fencing is fun, and the creativity of some of the people is great!

Actually my interest in SCA stems from my desire to learn Archery. The creativity of the folk is amazing. I love it.

Having been an SCA member for a long time, I can honestly say it's LARP, not Living History.
Living History deals with REAL LIFE(tm) History. SCA is using Real Life for the basis, but the setting is fantasy, which makes it LARP. There is no such kingdoms as Meredes, Atlantia, or An Tir, for example. Nor, were there any real kingdoms who's crown was determined by public Tourney on a yearly basis. Nor, are there nearly enough serfs.
Living History can be set in any part of history (most common in the US as Civil War, but you do see some of other periods, such as Colonial, and Wild West). The individuals when in their "persona", when they are upper echelon, are the persona of a real historical figure (i.e. a Civil War group reenacting the Battle of Antietam, have the commanders of the groups be the Generals and commanders history says was there). The privates and corporals, while sometimes are known people, usually use their real names for the persona.
Memnoch, I'm sorry your local group, or the groups you've encountered, have been such dicks. It is not the way it's supposted to be... but, as you well know, any group has to deal with that. And, it's worse when to be a part of the group, money has to be spent (sometimes a great deal of money).
And, final edit, CosPlay is dressing in costume just for the sake of dressing in costume. Usually there is an event one is attending (Con, RenFaire, et al), but the costuming is completely optional. Technically, Hallowe'en is the single largest CosPlay event. Of course, CosPlay can be done privately or publicly...
